St Helens protected by Mace

Burton’s Mace Electrical has recently completed installing a specialised security system at the Parish Church of St Helens, in Darley Dale, near Matlock.

The church which dates from the 12th century with its impressive square 14th century tower, which contains earlier and later additions to the structure, was restored in 1877.

The Church roof had been targeted earlier in the year and the Parish took the decision to protect its valuable lead covering with the advanced CCTV system.

Mace Managing Director Simon Chapman, who personally surveyed the Church, said, “Our work at St. Laurence’s in Measham provided a clear example of our skills in protecting the fabric and structure of these historic buildings”.

“St Helens falls right within that category of our contract work. The Mace engineers had to work at high levels inside and outside the Church to install the system and took great care not to damage the fabric. They have completed work that will give the Church increased security and protection”.

The churchyard contains one of the oldest trees in the country, reputed to be some 2000 years old. However, various experts have suggested that it may be nearer 700 years of age. Today, the tree's width measures about 32 ft. (9.8m).

The contractor’s work on historic buildings in the West and East Midlands forms a key part of its submission in the 2010 Birmingham Chamber of Commerce and Industry Awards.

Mace has been shortlisted with five other companies for the prestigious ‘Best Contribution to the Community’ Award.
