Mace completes upgrade to College Facilities

With the start of the new Academic Year, Mace Midlands has just completed interior works at Burton and South Derbyshire College with new electrical systems installed in more than 20 classrooms and suites.

The leading local contractor, whose Managing Director is a former student at the College, undertook electrical refurbishment works over an 8-week period in the summer holidays.

Mace engineers designed and installed new power and data points in the classrooms which incorporated the addition of on-surface and bench trunking to the latest safety standards. Works also included the installation of interactive white boards, transformation of the Hair and Beauty studio, upgrades to the ICT suites and the creation of two new creative studios.

Mace along with its engineers and apprentices each has their own close associations with the College. Nine Mace apprentices completed their City and Guilds Electrical Installation work, Course 2330, seven with Distinction, on three-year programmes delivered by Burton and South Derbyshire College for JLP Training.

Peter Bunting, training officer at JTL, who delivered the apprenticeship programmes said, “These City & Guilds courses run by JTL provide the perfect foundation for the apprentices by combining detailed workshop practicals with separate learning modules”.

Mace Midlands MD Simon Chapman added, “These Advanced Apprenticeships have ensured that our engineers develop practical on-the-job experience and achieved highly regarded qualifications. They are putting this knowledge to excellent use in these contracts at the College, and with all our local and national electrical, security and air-conditioning works”.

Mace is now investing in further training at Burton and South Derbyshire College with its apprentices attending day-release courses in Electrical Installation work, as part of their five-year advanced apprenticeships that will see them gain full NVQs.

Mace MD, Simon Chapman, who himself trained at Burton and South Derbyshire College as an electrician, added, “We believe in the value of in-house training that is fully complemented by quality instruction and courses to nationally recognised qualifications”.

“The College’s courses are perfect for our apprentices. Immediately they begin their training with JTL, we note a significant improvement in their understanding and all-round skills. By the end of their apprenticeships, they are fully competent to handle all the challenging work we offer them”.
